Who smiles the most? The world's happiest countries

Alright everybody, get those pearly whites out and flash us a smile.

Apparently New Zealanders have some work to do in the smiling department, a new study has found.

Travel app Jetpac analysed more than 150 million Instagram photos to determine the happiest countries based on who smiles the most.

Image processing technology allowed landscape shots and other people-less photos to be turfed out, leaving behind photos of people taken in 2000 cities around the world.

The Jetpac team then assessed the size of the people’s smiles to come up with a “smile score” for each country.

“Jetpac is identifying smiles on faces and then measuring the shape and size of the smile - a small grin doesn’t score as highly as a broad smile,” the company’s website says.

Brazil took out the title as the happiest (or most smiley) nation, with a score of 60.8. In fact, there must be something in the water over at central and South America, as nine of the top 10 ‘happiest’ countries are from the region.

At the other end of the scale lies Japan, with a dismal smile score of just 4.1.

New Zealand ranks a sobering 67th on the list, with a score of 23.2, putting it behind the US at 33rd, the UK at 62nd and Australia at 49th.
