Asian cities have made a huge leap forward in a ranking of the most popular city destinations worldwide.

Research company Euromonitor International has released its annual top 100 city destinations list based on figures analysed from travel in 2010.

Hong Kong topped the chart with more than 19.97 million international arrivals, which represented year-on-year growth of 18 percent.

Singapore came in next with nearly 18.3 million visitors and 16 percent growth.

International arrivals to London grew by just 2 percent in 2010, but the vibrant metropolis still managed to pull in 14.58 million foreign visitors.

Euromonitor International says Hong Kong's booming economy and growing appeal as a tourist destination is drawing both business and leisure travellers. People arriving from mainland China accounted for about 60 percent of the arrivals.

Cities in South-East Asia recorded the most growth, with Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh attracting 28.4 percent more visitors than 2009, and Halong also getting a boost of 28 percent.

Tokyo arrivals also went up 28 percent, while Macau's increased 25.9 percent and Manila 25.6 percent.

Auckland came in at 62nd, just behind Vancouver, while Queenstown just made the list at number 99.
