Queen Street Backpackers

Having seen pictures and decided the pricing and location were exactly what we were looking for, my partner and I decided to spend our last night together (before he travelled home for a year) at Queen St Backpackers. We booked a double room, checked twice that it was what we were going to be receiving and made our way there two days later, on the 15th of February 2009. We were frustrated and disappointed to find that they had in fact taken in a couple the night before who had decided 'they wanted to stay another two nights' and thus told us there were no double rooms available. The only form of compensation we were offered was a free beer at the bar, and even then it was stressed 'one beer, not two!' Despite their mistake and our obvious disappointment the staff member on was completely unapologetic, giving us instead a choice between two twin rooms instead. We chose the one on the lighter side of the building, reasoning we could always pull the mattresses onto the floor for the night. However even this managed to disappoint, as our room was virtually a shoe-box, with just enough room to squeeze in a set of bunks and a sink. It was noisy all night; reception failed to notify us on their early check-out procedures, and all in all made this a much more unpleasant experience than it should have been. Having backpacked around for a while too I know normal hostel standards, and this was definitely below parr. Would not recommend under any circumstances.
