Let me stress we really enjoyed having this group on the boat. They were out for a fun time and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The outing was not what we would describe as a serious fishing trip, a 'Stag Do' in fact, but there was the usual serious beer drinking. The trip was booked for only four hours, plus we gave them an extra hour free, which meant there was not a lot of time.
Because there were a couple of divers on board, we had to go to an area that was suitable for them to dive, which compromised the fishing. The divers were in the water for a considerable amount of time, oblivious to the fishermen. We have a very good reputation for catching fish and it would certainly not be in our interest to otherwise stay in a spot that wasn't producing! Most fishermen realise that there are no guarantees, and some days are better than others. On the whole the fishing this summer has been awesome.
As for coming within 8 metres of another boat, that never happened. The distance was 50 metres, the guard zone on the radar was on, and the boats were never on a collision course. The Skipper has been accident free for 23 years, and doesn't take risks.
Our deckhands that day were young lads, but they are very experienced and most helpful. They enjoy fishing, fillet the fish for the customers, and give away what they catch. If they were offered a beer on the way back, they would probably have gratefully accepted. That was the nature of the trip! They would certainly never have helped themselves.
