Christchurch International Airport opened in 1953 and is the South Island's largest and busiest airport. It is located 12 kilometres to the northwest of the city centre, in the suburb of Harewood.
The airport is about to embark on a major upgrade costing over $200 million, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2009, due to increasing passenger numbers.
International flights operate to and from four Australian destinations - Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne - as well as Singapore, Bangkok, Dubai, Fiji (June to October) and Rarotonga. Domestic flights are operated by Air New Zealand, Pacific Blue and Qantas.
