Consisting of about 30 members, Nelson Lakes Gliding Club fly from Lake Station which is about 9 kilometers west of St Arnaud.

The 1500 meter long airstrip which is 1700 feet above sea level is situated on a large sheep and cattle farm owned by the McConochie families. Situated on the airstrip are 10 or so privately owned sailplanes in their trailers as well as a hanger for our 2 two-seat club sailplanes and 2 single-seat club sailplanes and a winch to launch with.

The winch launch gets us some 1500 feet above the valley floor and level with the two low ridges on either side. These nursery ridges give ridge or thermal lift and from them you can normally progress onto the Southern Alps.

Further Information: The best way to start Gliding is with a trial flight. This is a flight of up to 15 min with an instructor, so you will get a chance to take the controls yourself. You can of course simply sit back and enjoy the view, taking the opportunity to get used to the sensations of quiet flight.
