New Zealand's oldest zoo, Wellington Zoo is situated on Daniell Street and was founded in 1906 when a young lion was presented to Wellington city by the Bostock and Wombwell Circus.
Wellington Zoo is home to more than 500 animals. The animals live in enclosures designed to be as natural and similar to the environment they would inhabit in the wild. Some of our animals live in mixed-species enclosures.
The number of animals at Wellington Zoo changes with births, deaths or transfers to or from other Zoos or as part of regional breeding programmes.
Zoos have changed drastically over the last hundred years and Wellington Zoo is committed to a future in conservation education by bringing animals and people closer together.
