Aranui Cave is a magical, mystical place steeped in Maori myth and legend. Set in the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve, five minutes drive from the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, the cave is named after Ruruku Aranui, the local Maori man who discovered it in 1910 as he pursued a wild pig.
The discovery of a new cave in Waitomo caused much excitement. The cave was much easier to develop than the Glowworm Cave, and is one of the most richly decorated caves in Waitomo.
This majestic cave displays the most beautiful collection of limestone and coral formations of all the caves in the Waitomo area. View pale brown, pink and white shades of huge stalactites up to 6m, stalagmites as tall as 3m, cathedral 20m high and beautiful walkways leading into the caverns. The high chambers, are truly spectacular.
