The township of Coromandel is close to the beaches of the northwest coast, with easy access to the many towns scattered along this stretch of coast.

The numerous beaches of the area are popular spots for fishing, camping, surfing, swimming and snorkelling. Accommodation is plentiful, with 'baches', or holiday homes dotted along the pohutukawa lined shores. Travelling to Papa Aroha reveals splendid scenery.

At the top western tip, Port Jackson (Poihakene) is a long spacious beach. It was once a bustling timber port. Fletcher Bay, situated at the northeast tip of the peninsula is rich with legends of shipwrecks and mariners tales, and gold and gum digging. The proud Moehau Range (Sleeping Wind) watches over the tip of the Peninsula as the road winds along the shoreline.

Across the range at Waikauwau Bay and Port Charles & Kennedy Bay, great teams of horses hauled their coaches and carts up to the summit. Although the pub is long gone, the spot offers a great view of the area.
