The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is one of New Zealand's newest walking tracks. It provides a wide variety of scenery during the three day/two night trek. The track passes through the world famous Waitutu coastal marine terraces, podocarp and beech forest, sub-alpine settings and spectacular sandstone outcrops.
This is an attractive walk with its unique combination of bush, beach and alpine scenery, awesome viaducts and the historic Port Craig area. Walkers will almost always see unique wildlife, including seals, Hector's dolphins and kea.
The area is rich in history from both Maori and European cultures. Key attractions are the recently restored Percy Burn Viaduct and the Edwin, Sandhill and Francis Burn viaducts. The track is a mixture of beach, bush tracks and boardwalk. Some areas are very sensitive and others can be muddy.
