At Nugget Point you can visit the lighthouse built in 1869. Fur seals and sea lions, sooty shearwaters, shags and yellow-eyed penguins (hoiho) and a breeding colony of gannets can all be found here.
The roar of the sea will fill your ears and the visual drama of vast skies, endless ocean and plummeting cliffs is gripping.
A good way to see both Nugget Point and Waipapa Point lighthouses is to follow the "Southern Scenic Route" and "Heritage Trails" from Balclutha to Invercargill through the Catlins area.
From Balclutha, drive to Kaka Point. From there a gravel road leads to Nugget Point. A 15 minute walk takes you out along a spectacular track to the lighthouse.
