The Milford Track (53.9km) is often described as the finest walk in the world. It follows several glaciated valleys, ascends an alpine pass and traverses some spectacular scenery. The walk takes four days/three nights and involves boat travel at both ends.

There are a few restrictions to walking this track; the number of walkers is limited each year (a maximum of 40 people can start the track each day) and camping is not permitted, huts provide the only accommodation on the track. Keeping the numbers down benefits the environment as well as ensuring the walk isn't overcrowded.

Bookings must be made in advance for walkers intending on departing between November and April (peak season). Bookings are made through the Great Walks Counter at the Fiordland National Park Department of Conservation (for contact details - see below).
