Two of New Zealand's most developed ski areas can be found on Mt Ruapehu - four hours' drive from Auckland or Wellington. The two parks, Turoa Ski Area and Whakapapa Ski Area are New Zealands biggest and busiest ski areas.
Called 'The Giant', Turoa offers 500ha of patrolled skiing, 11 lifts and Australasia's longest vertical run, at 722m. The ideal destination for an exciting family snow experience and is NZ's highest ski area.
Within the 550ha patrolled Whakapapa Ski Area there is excellent skiing and boarding for all levels. There are 30 groomed trails and a huge variety of off-piste areas which intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders will love. Happy Valley is Whakapapa's learner area; separated from the main ski areas, it provides a secure area for learners.
