The Franz Joseph was named after the Austrian Emperor and named by the first explorer of the glacier and fellow Austrian, geologist Julius von Haast in 1865.
The Glacier is 5 kms from the Franz Josef village and only a 20minute walk from the car park to the glacial face, otherwise known as the terminal face.
There are good vantage points with roped areas and for adventure seekers wanting to take themselves further into the glacier it is best to take a guide. There are good walks to choose from to suit all levels of interest and adventure.
