Tauranga Bay at Cape Foulwind has a seal-breeding colony with seals present year round. An excellent track to the viewing platforms overlooking the colony allows wheelchair access and is an easy 10-minute walk.
Interpretive panels at the platforms provide information on the activity in the colony, and the seals breeding cycle, as well as historical information about the sealing industry that once existed in New Zealand.
Contrary to the name given to the area by Captain Cook in 1770 when he encountered particularly nasty weather, the Cape is a pleasant place to visit, with the antics of the seals providing hours of entertainment.
