The Tongariro Alpine Crossing Track is a fairly demanding rugged alpine trek which is exposed to the elements and climbs to 1900m. The crossing spans the length of Mt Tongariro (17 Kilometres) and takes about 7-9 hours. Start from the Mangatepopo Valley and walk over towards the Ketetahi Road end as this will minimise the climbing involved.
Important things to remember are; arrange transport to the begining of the trek and a pick up from the end with your accommodation or shuttle service provider. Be prepared for changeable alpine weather with tramping boots, windproof/rainproof jacket, trousers, warm layers, warm hat and gloves. Cotton clothing is not suitable in alpine conditions (this includes jeans). The weather in the car park can be totally different to what's going on nearly 1000 meters higher and further up the track. Be prepared to change your plans and turn back especially when visibility is poor and in strong winds.
Tongariro National Park was the first national park to be declared in New Zealand and the fourth in the world. The local Maori people handed over management of the park to the people of New Zealand in 1887 to ensure it's conservation, the first time this occurred worldwide.
