For a unique West Coast experience stay in the home of an artist.

Mary's House Homestay offers budget accommodation in Granity, a charming eccentric arts and crafts village on the northern West Coast. It is NZ$35 for one person and NZ$60 for a couple. This includes a continental breakfast.

The house has a steep rain-forested hill immediately behind and a beautiful wild beach about 200 metres in front.

The guest room has a comfortable antique brass double bed with pure cotton sheets, a wool-filled duvet and feather pillows. You fall asleep to the sound of the sea and wake up to bird song. It also has a computer with internet access, and if you want to unpack and settle down there is plenty of storage space in old wooden furniture full of character.

You can relax with an espresso coffee or a glass of wine, either on the verandah shaded by palm trees (perhaps watching the sun set over the sea), or on the private patio looking at the rain forest.

Further Information: A continental breakfast is included in the price. This is usually cereal, fruit, and home-made organic wholemeal bread, with espresso coffee, tea or green tea. I roast my own fair trade organic coffee beans so a good fresh espresso coffee is guaranteed!
Local Area: About 250 people live in Granity. Many of them are artists and craftspeople. Granity has a lot of charm and character as it still has most of its original 1890-1920 wooden buildings. It even has an artist-owned gallery/craft shop, Torea Gallery, in the pretty building that was once the post office and telephone exchange. Other attractions in Granity CBD are a museum, a theatre (with fortnightly movies), a second-hand shop, a library, and the world famous (on the West Coast) Drifters Cafe. Granity has a stunning wild beach with sand, driftwood and interesting stones (mostly granite, not surprisingly). There are nearby bush walks, the most notable being the Charming Creek Walkway.
Getting There: Granity is a small village in the northern Buller region of the West Coast of the South Island. Granity is 29 kilometres north of Westport which is the nearest town with the nearest supermarket. It takes about 20 minutes to drive from Westport to Granity. Mary's House Homestay is at the south (Westport) end of Granity. You will see the green Granity sign, then almost immediately you will cross Twins Creek, and then Mary's House Homestay is a few houses along on the right hand side of the very quiet main road.
Info for Disabled: The house has a ground level entrance at the back, making it easily accessible for people using sticks or crutches. However it isn't suitable for wheelchairs inside the house as the doorways are too narrow and the turns are too sharp. The bathroom has a shower stool and a non-slip bathmat. If you have any other special needs please get in touch and everything possible will be done.
