New Zealand's longest river, the Waikato stretches 425km through the Waikato region, driving eight hydro dams with its awesome power. The name 'Waikato' comes from Maori and translates as 'flowing water'.

Anglers travel from far and wide for the trout fishing along the river and its tributeries. The river runs from Lake Taupo to Port Waikato (about an 18-hour journey).

Visitors and locals can participate in different water-based activities; canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, jet boat rides and fishing. Contact a visitor information centre for further information.
