History
The first official library in Queenstown was termed the 'old stone library', as it was one of the early stone buildings of the gold rush age. The date of construction of this building (attached to the old courthouse) is thought to have been 1876-77. Precise information is unclear due to the lack of records and the controversy surrounding the construction. Prior to this official library of Athenaeum, (as libraries were known at this time) it is thought that the Queenstown Library was housed in a private building.
Awards
The controversy surrounding the library continued when, in 1963, it was first mooted that demolition of the 'old stone library' may be on the cards. Then in 1965 the Queenstown Borough Council made the decision to replace the Queenstown Library. Voices were raised in protest, and after 2 years of public debate a referendum was set. This resulted in the library being preserved.
