Located at the eastern end of this valley is Mt Rosa, a legendary merino sheep station and one of the largest wine producers in this dynamic region. Mt Rosa's vineyards produce a range of wines including the region's flagship, pinot noir. In New Zealand, Central Otago's Gibbston Valley has become synonymous with producing some the world's most unique pinot noir.

Mt Rosa's vineyards have extraordinary natural potential, with its extensive sunny sheltered north facing vineyards and ideal soil type, the wines promise to be superb. The production focus is pinot noir and to a lesser extent pinot Gris, the balance of the harvest to be comprised of Riesling, chardonnay and sauvignon Blanc. Mt Rosa's first releases were the 2003 vintage pinot noir and pinot Gris.

History
The region around Mt Rosa is rich in history - a large amount of gold was taken from this area in the late 1800's, and recently it was the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping. Nestled in the hillside at the far east of the valley, Mt Rosa has a long history as a high country farm. The tough, fine woolled Merino sheep being ideal stock to run in this rugged and often harsh environment, their lower grazing pastures have now given way to vines which thrive in the long bright days and the cool clear nights. This 40 hectare estate is one of the largest in the Central Otago region.
