Fiordland National Park is a vast, remote wilderness and the heart of Te Waipounamu/South Westland World Heritage area in New Zealand's South Island. One of the great wilderness areas of the Southern Hemisphere it is renowned as the home of Mitre Peak, Milford and Doubtful Sounds, and for the many great walks - the Milford, Routeburn, and Kepler Tracks.
The variety of habitats in Fiordland allows a diverse flora and fauna to thrive and its isolation has encouraged endemism with over 700 plants found only in Fiordland. Also home to an array of rare indigenous birds, Fiordland is especially associated with the takahe - a plump flightless bird. The takahe is so rare that it was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1948.
Snow-capped mountains, rivers of ice, deep lakes, forests and tussock grasslands produce a landscape of exceptional beauty.
