Who's a poor sod then? You can find out at The Golden Point Historic Reserve, 50km inland from Palmerston and adjacent to the giant Macraes gold mine. As well as the machinery of mining, the reserve maintains the manager's house and three sod cottages used by miners.
The sods were cut from the ground, dried, and then used as bricks. A mud plaster protected the bricks from weathering. Interpretation panels guide visitors through the features of the reserve. The stamping battery is still occasionally run on open days.
