Located a short distance from Geraldine, Peel Forest is a remnant of a magnificent podocarp forest which once covered a huge area in mid-Canterbury. There is now only 700ha remaining, but what is left is rich and diverse. The canopy of towering podocarps hosts a rich variety of native bush and bird life and there are dozens of tracks to explore.
A popular recreation area, a wide variety of short and long tracks extend into the park. Ranging from a gentle stroll around Dennistoun Bush or for the more adventurous there is an energetic tramp to the top of Mount Peel (Tarahaoa) or Little Mount Peel (Huatekerekere). From the top you will be rewarded with an amazing view over the Canterbury plains. All tracks are signposted and well marked.
The nearby Rangitata River is renowned for its world-class salmon fishing - and thrill seekers can experience kayaking and the ultimate white water rafting trip.
