Pukekura Park and the Bowl of Brooklands sit in the heart of New Plymouth. The 49ha of lush native bush and groomed gardens were opened in 1876 and the city has grown around it. The park is a recreational centre for young and old, with two lakes - one of which has wooden rowboats for hire - a children's playground, cricket ground, fernery, kiosk, waterfall, and a historic band rotunda.
The Bowl of Brooklands within the grounds is a natural amphitheatre that's a relaxing venue for national and international acts to play in the sunshine or under the stars. New Zealand's WOMAD world music festival is held here in March each year. This three-day event features up to 400 performers from 18 countries.
Pukekura Park is also home to the Festival of the Lights. From mid-December to the beginning of February special lighting is set up throughout the park. The effect is stunning as the grounds come alive at night with rainbow waterfalls, glowing plants and trees that shimmer sublime reflections onto the lakes. If you're lucky you might even catch sight of the glow-worms. Even on a dark night you won't get lost, as the paths are laden with fluorescent pebbles.
