This is New Zealand's largest scenic reserve, covering 1800ha along the Opotiki to Gisborne highway. The area was cleared for farming after World War I, but has been allowed to revert to its natural wild state after farming was abandoned.

The Waioeka River flows through the park, and offers excellent trout fishing and swimming in a private, peaceful and natural environment. Hunting, hiking, camping, picnics, canoeing, river rafting and swimming are other options for a great day outdoors.
