Whale (Moutuhora) Island in Bay of Plenty, North Island, New Zealand.
Named Moutuhora (Meaning Whale) by its first Moari discoverers and then Whale by its European discoverer Capt James Cook, the name says it all and describes the Island well from a seaward approach. The Island is owned by the Ngati awa People and Administered by the Department of Conservation as a Wildlife Sanctuary.
Whakatane's closest most distinguishable ocean landmark is rich in history both Maori and European. Landbased tours are only run on a limited bases through a DOC concessionair and for the past 10 years this has been the "Whakatane Volunteer Coastguard"
2-4 Hour ECO Marine Tours which may include a beach landing in Sulphur Bay and a snorkle in Mc Ewens Bay are run on a regular basis by "Diveworks Charters"
