The grand style of Edwardian and Roaring Twenties life is preserved at the historic mansion Olveston, built in 1904-06 for Dunedin piano seller and merchant David Theomin and his family.
The home was designed by one of the best British domestic architects of the time, Sir Ernest George, and parts of the house were shipped out from Britain. Olveston contains furniture and treasures from all around the world.
After the death of the Theomins only daughter, Dorothy, in 1966, the 35-room mansion was bequeathed to the city. The house and contents remain much the same since the 20 years after it was built.
Olveston offers visitors a glimpse of the lifestyle of a well-to-do family at the time of the Great War.
