New Zeland's only castle, Larnach, was a labour of love. Located on the Otgao Peninsula, it was built by William Larnach - government minister, banker, financier and merchant baron - for his beloved first wife, Eliza Jane Guise. Construction began in 1871 and 200 workmen beavered away for five years before the family moved in.

Gifted European craftsmen worked for 11 more years to embellish the interiors with the finest materials from around the world. The ornate interior carving, detailed stonework, woodcarving, plasterwork and glass are outstanding. In all there are 43 rooms and a giant ballroom.
