North Wind Lodge is a backpacker's hostel with a touch of luxury. Set on 10 acres in a beautiful seaside location, all linen and towels are provided, there is a TV room with books and games, and a well-equipped kitchen. A small grocery store with competitive prices has all the essentials, including pasta, canned goods and chocolate. Guests love the freshly-baked bread and fair-trade coffee.

Things to do: Ride toboggans down the Te Paki Sand Dunes. See Rarawa Beach, with pure white silica sand. Visit Cape Reinga, the northernmost point of New Zealand or visit the Ancient Kauri Museum at Awanui. Maybe just have a beer with the locals at the Houhora Tavern.
