History: A PIECE OF LOCAL HISTORY Maori have lived in this spectacular geo-thermal region since the 14th century. Their villages made use of the thermal hot water for cooking and warmth and Rotorua today is built around key geo-thermal sites. It was named by a tribal leader called Ihenga and translates as "second lake" - it was the second big lake he discovered in the region. Tourists were coming here by the mid-1800s, largely to see the Pink and White Terraces, then regarded by Westerners as the eighth wonder of the world. A massive volcanic eruption from Mt Tarawera in 1886 devastated the Terraces and killed over 150 people. Ash from the eruption fell on Wellington in the south, and the explosion could be heard as far away as Picton, at the top of the South Island.
