"Wide Spread River Mouth" or Mawhera is the Maori translation for Greymouth. A healthy population of 13,500 this major regional centre is another old gold mining town with a more residential settlement feel than a "touristy hotspot." It is the largest centre on the West Coast.

The town sits at the mouth of the Grey River hence its name. A major East Coast to West Coast route by road and rail between Christchurch and Greymouth, the town sees a lot of tourist traffic and is a typical "passing through" destination.
