The Otago Central Rail Trail is a unique recreational facility preserving, largely intact, an important part of Otago's history. The 150km section of former railway line has been redeveloped by the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust and the Department of Conservation for use by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The unique Central Otago scenery and sense of remoteness and history make this a memorable part of the South Island.
A special feature of the trail is the section between Lauder and Auripo. This section contains the longest bridge on the trail at 112m and two tunnels which have been cut through the schist hillside. All the bridges have been redecked and had handrails added. The Otago Central Rail Trail is now a huge drawcard to the area; more than 10,000 people used the trail in its first year.
