The Wairere Boulders located near Horeke, a Hokianga town in the Far North of Northland, is a prime landmark that has existed since thousands of years and is one of the major eco tourism attractions. Thought to be 2.8 million years old, Wairere Boulders was formed by a lava flow, which turned into a basalt layer.
Wairere Boulders offers scenery that cannot be viewed anywhere else on the planet. The geomorphic formation of a 1.5 km long valley with thousands of "fluted" basalt boulders formed from chemical leaching caused by soil acidity and tannin accumulated from rain dripping through the kauri tree canopy, is world unique and can only be seen in Northland.
The track through the valley goes over, around and under the boulders, some up to 30m in height and takes you through rainforest and past many native trees, palms and ferns that are identified with signs or by host Felix.
