The West Coast Historical Museum tells the stories of the West Coast's illustrious past, reconstructing the town's history with displays of original relics, artefacts and photographs.
Goldmining, pounamu (greenstone), pioneer settlement, coastal travel, pubs and the Port of Hokitika are all well represented in the Museum's collections and displays. A 18 minute audio-visual journey on gold and greenstone provides images and stories depicting the years since the Maori and pioneer beginnings, together with a fun treasure hunt for the kids and all weather gold panning in the miner's hut.
An excellent family and local history research centre. An appointment is recommended and charges do apply.
