On 17 June 1929 ten people in the small township of Murchison died during a tragic earthquake. The settlement was lifted almost half a metre, it was impossible to stand at the worst of the quake, and every building in the town was uninhabitable, many completely destroyed. Huge slips came down off the surrounding mountains.
