Overlooked by Te Putiki O Kahu, a fortified Maori settlement first inhabited 700 years ago, the Waiheke Island Historic Village, hosts a collection of artefacts, photographs and archives held in trust for the Waiheke Island Community.
The Historic Village consists of the Woolshed Museum, a restored cottage presented as an Island dwelling of the 1930's, a second cottage refurbished as a photographic gallery and a textile display area. Other exhibitions include a "long-drop" toilet, wool press, and a whale boiling cauldron.
Exhibits are arranged by Volunteers who collect and display objects to demonstrate various aspects of life on Waiheke. Displays include Maori settlement of the area, agriculture and timber felling, domestic life, childhood on the Island and maritime history.
