A garden for all seasons, Middle Rock is one of 3 open gardens in the Lake Coleridge area. The properties combine to provide a group day tour with a mix of gardens, farming, stunning high country scenery, history and hospitality within an easy driving distance of Christchurch.
Visitors travel to the Lake Coleridge area and begin the day with morning tea at one of Canterbury's historic homesteads part of a well known early Canterbury farming run. Guests are welcomed by the owners who give the history of this sheep and cattle farming property. Morning tea is served and before departure there is time for a wander of the homestead garden and a glimpse inside the family homestead.
At midday the group arrives at Middle Rock. Groups are met and welcomed by their hosts. A history of this sheep farming property is given before guests join the family for lunch in the homestead. The visit concludes with a garden wander and a 30 minute farm tour by coach with commentary from the owners. Local visitors also have the chance to purchase plants from the garden's plant nursery which sells hardy perennial plants sourced from the homestead garden.
Early afternoon the group travels to the head of the Lake Coleridge region to visit a remote sheep and cattle farm which is also home to one of NZ's top sheep dog trialling families. The group is met by the family and entertained with a demonstration of sheep dog training and trialling. After a tour of the homestead garden visitors join the family for afternoon tea before returning to their coach to begin the journey home.
The High Country Tour has been operating for 20 years and has consistently been a popular tour option for international groups, conference groups and local community groups.
