You can find Wind Gardens 10 minutes from the centre of Wellington City, barely fifty metres from the beach at the bottom of Houghton Bay Road. The garden has been created to withstand the extreme harshness of the climate, being blasted frequently by north and salt-laden south winds.
The designed layout of the garden creates different microclimates, sheltering plants from the severity of the wind, resulting in a stunning display of continuous flowers for nine months of the year. A wide diversity of perennials and shrubs, natives, exotics, and cottage garden plants have been orchestrated together, harmoniously integrated into one landscape to thrive with the elements and dominate the existing weed growth with minimal maintenance.
Wind Gardens are a must see for all gardening enthusiasts! Garden tours and organic honey-mead tasting at the adjacent Haewai Meadery can be arranged by appointment only. Jacob, the garden's creator has published 3 books about creating low maintenance gardens in exposed areas; "Wind Gardens" and "Creating a Natural Garden".
