Hokitika or "Hoki" is where one can see New Zealand's Greenstone carvings and 'Tikis' and 'Taniwha' images being worked from this semi precious stone. This is a major centre for these carvings and artefacts and has become a main attraction.
Slightly smaller than Greymouth, Hokitika gives access to beautiful rainforests with rivers and lakes and is a quieter stop along the West Coast for travellers looking for something a little more historical and interesting.
Every March, Hokitika hosts a major event for the West Coast, The Wildfoods Festival. This festival is becoming increasingly popular and attracts up to 20,000 people and is held in the town's 'Cass Square'.
