The Tokomaru Steam Engine Museum is an extensive private collection of industrial machinery belonging to Colin and Esma Stevenson. After constant requests from steam enthusiasts the museum opened to the public in 1970.
Thousands of visitors from all across the globe have taken pleasure from reminiscing about the past as they admired the relics of New Zealand's industrial and agricultural heritage.
The village of Tokomaru was originally established to assist the surrounding farming community. Today the steam engine museum is the most prominent feature of the village. Industrial progress continues in the area with Stevenson's Structural Steel, the districts' leading employer.
