Butler Point Whaling Museum, acknowledged as one of the most comprehensive private museums of its kind in New Zealand, has been developed to remember the close association of the Point and Mangonui with whaling. William Butler, a former whaling captain, constructed a trade store from which he supplied visiting whaling ships and the museum contains exhibits of authentic items associated with the whaling industry.

Among the items on display are a refurbished ship's whaleboat, examples of whalebone, a large range of harpoons and cutting in equipment, paraphernalia associated with shipboard life, models of whale ships and whaleboats and much more.

Other Butler Point attractions include Butler House, exotic and native flora gardens, a pa, and picnic and barbecue areas.
