One of the most inspiring and extensive private gardens in New Zealand, Trotts Garden is set on a three hectare property combining formal and woodland areas. The woodland area developed around gently curving walls offers garden rooms planted with unusual shrubs and trees, providing a stunning array of colour and form all year round.
Bordering the woodland garden and flowing into it, is a stream edged with a fine collection of water plants. This water garden features a gazebo, belvedere, large dove cote, and frames for pleaching and has a board walk for visitors to enjoy beautiful plantings close to hand. Further on past the bog garden is the English inspired formal gardens, with a 110m herbaceous border and a 1916 chapel, lovingly restored and moved here. It is used for weddings and functions.
The layout is such that the garden areas are integrated yet contain elements of surprise as the visitor explores.
