The great Hawke's Bay Earthquake in February 1931 destroyed most of inner city Napier. The rebuilding of the city featured many buildings in the cost effective and strong Art Deco Style.

After the rejuvenation of Napier, there is now a range of Art Deco walks, guided or self-guided, to explore the 140 buildings of the 1920s and 30s in Napier's city centre.

The Art Deco Shop offers guests an exciting shopping experience. The annual Brebner Print Art Deco weekend on the third weekend of February, brings the Art Deco era to life, and is a must see for all visitors. The Art Deco Trust introduces visitors to the fascinating Jazz Age architecture of Napier, New Zealand's most significant post-colonial heritage attraction.
