Things to do: Great Barrier Island Great barrier island is a rugged landscape, one of the last great wildernesses of the Auckland area. In the centre of the island, spectacular bluffs and ridges rise to the highest peak of Mt Hirakimata (621m). On the west coast, steep forest covered ranges run down to the sea where they meet a flooded coastal landscape, a maze of bays, islands and indented fiord-like harbours. Parts of the eastern coastline are more gentle, with sweeping white sand beaches backed by tidal creeks.
