Taihape is a popular travellers stop on SH1, just an hour from the Ski Fields and close to the magnificiant Rangitikei River, popular for Trout fishing, Bungy Jumping, Rafting & Kayaking. Taihape has become known as the Gumboot Capital of New Zealand, and in November year 2000 hosts the World Gumboot Throwing Fesitval.
In the surrounding countryside there are many world class gardens to visit, and the rural scenary is popular with photographers and artists.
