Stratford is the gateway to the National Parks; Central Taranaki junction of State Highways 3 - 43 and is the closest town to Egmont National Park and the western entrance to the Whanganui National Park. The mountain has wonderful, easily accessed short walks in the beautiful bush, 3 to 5 day wilderness adventures for those of you after something more and skiing in winter.

Local Area
Taranaki, on the North Island's west coast, juts into the Tasman Sea halfway between Auckland and Wellington. It's dominated by Mt Taranaki, a huge snow-capped volcanic cone. The Egmont National Park encompassing the mountain and surrounding land is perfect for hiking. In winter, Mt Taranaki becomes a place to ski. The main city in the region, New Plymouth, is an arty place with glorious parks and gardens, and black sand beaches.
