Take a trip to Wanganui, steeped in histroy and culture and visit this restored Kawana water-power mill, with original waterwheel and grinding stones.
The mill was originally built with the help of Governor Grey to grind the wheat grown by local Maori farmers.
The Wanganui district was first settled by the Maori people, who saw the potential in living beside the Whanganui River, with the sheltered fertile valley and the abundant food supply.
