Kiwi ingenuity comes alive at these rural engineering works made from mud brick and corrugated iron. Hayes Engineering Works, was established in 1895, and by the 1930s had grown into a business with a worldwide reputation, providing farmers with everything from wire strainers to windmills.
The Works have been well preserved and appear almost as they did when in full operation. Buildings include a stone workshop with sun-dried brick additions, sun-dried brick stables, office and the family homestead built 1895. Much of the plant is still in working order.
