Ophir Post Office has been serving the goldfields town of Ophir since 1886 when it was built to replace the earlier post office and this attractive building still operates today as a postal agency. Constructed from local schist with contrasting detail, the Ophir Post Office is an important feature in the historic streetscape of Ophir.
A post office has operated continuously on this site since 1863, and since the 1890s has been run by women. The current one was built in 1886 of schist masonry with plaster details. In 1976 it was purchased by the Historic Places Trust and restored to its former beauty.
It still has most of its original furnishings and the internal layout is largely unchanged from the time of its construction. Ophir residents can collect and post mail from the Post Office for three hours each weekday morning.
