Fyffe House is currently open to the public as a house museum. Built in 1842, Fyffe House is the oldest surviving building from Kaikoura's whaling past. The cottage, built from native timbers with lath and plaster interior walls and mud and straw insulation, rests on whalebone foundations.
More than a house, the site's significance encompasses many aspects of human history in the South Island, including moa hunting, kumara gardening, whaling, port activities, family life and tourism. Fyffe House's setting has altered little as it looks across the sea from Avoca Point to the beautiful Seaward Kaikoura mountains.
The town of Kaikoura has retained its links with its whaling past, and today is known internationally as the whale watching capital of the world.
